內容簡介:
Along with globalization, English has established itself as the world's
common language for academic and business interactions, becoming the
international language of choice, or lingua franca (Bambose, 2001; Graddol,
2006 ; Murata & Jenkins, 2009). Meanwhile, a recent phenomenon, commonly
known as English as a lingua franca (ELF), has ushered in a paradigm shift
in which the status of the native-speaking English as the Standard, as the
perfect language model, has been rethought, thus leading to gradual
acceptance, or legitimization, of localized varieties of English (Murata &
Jenkins, 2009). This new perceptive is revolutionary in that non-native
speakers of English are empowered: no longer are the non-native speakers of
English "learners" but "international users;" no longer are localized use of
the English language viewed as errors or deficiencies; rather, they are
unique varieties with their own rights (Mauranen, 2007).
The phenomenon of ELF shares some common grounds to the notion of
glocalization, a concept popularize by Sociologist Robertson (1995), and
referring to "the simultaneity- the co-presence-of both universalizing and
particularizing tendencies" (Robertson, 1995: 25). The phenomenon of ELF
and glocalization have several implications concerning ESP teaching in
Taiwan. In order to understand how glocalization has affected ESP
education on the island, this talk first examines how ESP education in
Taiwan has responded to globalization, before moving on to discuss
glocalization of the English language, where the phenomenon is most
visible, then extending the discussion of glocalization to ESP education
and pedagogy. Finally the implications of glocalization on ESP teaching in
Taiwan will be discussed. In response, this talk purposes that the
glocalization approach may provide some insights into the practice of ESP
teaching under the phenomenon of ELF , and help Taiwan's English users find
a legitimate role in
which they can contribute.
